Amazon Prime Video: A brief history!

Amazon Prime Video is an American subscription video-on-demand OTT streaming. It mainly distributes T.V. series and films produced by Amazon Studios or licensed to Amazon as Prime Originals or exclusives. This operates worldwide. However, it requires a full Prime subscription to be accessed. But, in countries like the U.S., U.K., and Germany, it can be accessed without a full subscription. On the other hand, it can only be accessed through a dedicated website in countries like Australia, France, Canada, India, Italy, and Turkey.

Amazon Prime Video offers an add-on service in the form of Prime Video Channels or Amazon channels. Users can subscribe to additional video subscription services from other content providers within Prime Video. It includes Shudder, HBO, StarzPlay, and Showtime—released on September 7, 2006, as Amazon Unbox in the U.S. Later, it was named Amazon Instant Video on Demand. Prime Video on December 14, 2016, released worldwide. It was available for a monthly promotional price of $2.99 per month for 1st six months and $5.99 per month after that.

History Amazon Prime Video –

In 2005, Amazon announced Amazon Prime as a membership service. Within the U.S., it offered free two-day shipping on all eligible purchases for an annual fee of $79 and discounted one-day shipping rates. Subsequently, Amazon launched its program in U.K., Japan, Germany, France, Italy, Canada, India, Turkey and Mexico. As of January 2020, it has members in 17 countries Asia-Pacific, North America, and Europe.

Amazon Prime membership in the U.S., Australia, India, Canada, UK, Italy, and Germany includes Amazon Video.  Certainly, it offers instant streaming of selected T.V. programs and films with no additional cost. Later in November 2011, it was announced that Prime members could access Kindle as well. It is an e-book platform to read books. The annual membership fee for the U.S. was increased in 2014. Then it announced Prime Music, providing unlimited, ad-free music streaming. Subsequently, Prime Photos were added. In 2015 Amazon delivered the same-day product to prime members.

Amazon Prime reached 54 million in January 2016. Prime members in England and London launched a restaurant delivery service with free delivery on all orders over £15. Amazon announced the Prime Exclusive Phone program in 2017. It increased the annual fee for Prime members in 2018. Amazon announced it installed “mini-fulfillment centers” in select U.S. cities on March 3, 2020.
