Covid and usage of Artificial Intelligence!

With a new disease outbreak, the world woke up at the start of this decade.  An outbreak of a novel Coronavirus emerged in Wuhan city in China’s Hubei province in December 2019. The WHO named this disease ‘COVID-19 and declared it a pandemic. The effort to address the Covid situation is leveraged by AI and big data. Earlier various forms of AI have been used in many disease outbreaks. AI has played a vital role in the fight against Covid by helping in many ways. 

The usage of AI in Covid –

It can be harnessed to forecast the spread of viruses and help develop early warning systems by extracting information from social media platforms, calls, and various other platforms. It can provide information about the region that are venerable and for the prediction of morbidity and mortality. For example, the app called HealthMap collects the data available publicly on Covid and makes it easily available to help in effective tracking of its spread.

With AI, mobile health applications can be developed where intelligent devices and a range of wearable devices can be used for contact tracing, diagnosis, and efficient monitoring in Covid. AI techniques are used for monitoring patients in clinical settings and predicting of course of treatment. Based on the data derived from vital statistics and clinical parameters, critical information for resource allocation can be provided by AI. It can also help in decision-making by prioritizing the need for ventilators and respiratory supports in the Intensive Care Unit. It can be used to predict chances of recovery or mortality.

AI can be used to detect and quantify Covid cases from chest x-ray and CT scan images. For differentiating between Covid and community-acquired pneumonia, researchers have developed a deep learning model called COVID-19 detection neural network (COVNet), based on visual 2D and 3D features extracted from the volumetric chest CT scan.

AI-based triage systems can reduce the work burden of medical staff and healthcare workers by automating several processes. It can impart training to practitioners, determine the mode of treatment and care. All these can be done by analyzing clinical data using pattern recognition approaches, digitalization of patient reports, and offering solutions to minimize contact with patients.

To classify patients, AI can be used based on the severity of symptoms, genetic disposition, and clinical reports so that patients can be handled effectively using different approaches. In telemedicine, AI can be used to minimize the need for unnecessary and frequent hospital visits by monitoring the case from distance and recording data of patients with mild symptoms and asymptomatic cases.

The structure of essential proteins AI can help in protecting crucial for virus entry and replication. It can also help spread awareness, knowledge, and practices toward Covid by getting information from various social media platforms. It can also help devise the strategy to assemble and disseminate timely and correct information for mitigating the impact of Covid.
