Cross Platform Patch Sees Makers of Borderlands 3 Remove Support For Sony Playstation Devices

Borderlands 3

Borderlands 3 is a first-person shooter developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K Games. It is the sequel to 2012 Borderlands 2 and the fourth installment in the main Borderlands series. Borderlands 3 released on September 13, 2019, on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and October 30, 2019, on Apple macOS. The stadium gates were opened on December 17, 2019. Xbox Series X, Series S, and PlayStation 5 were released on November 10 and 12, respectively, including free updates for users of previous consoles.

Borderlands 3 players will soon be able to find loot together on the platform. But if your friend isn’t on PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5, Borderlands developer Randy Pitchford, president, and CEO of Gearbox Software, tweeted on Thursday. Good news and bad news. The good news for Pitchford is that Gearbox has integrated game updates that are supported across all platforms.

Bad news? Borderlands 3 publisher 2K Games has asked Gearbox to “remove inter-game support for the PlayStation console” to be eligible for the patch, Pitchford said. This means cross-play is limited to other platforms Borderlands 3 is available on Mac, Stadium, Windows, Xbox One, Xbox Series X. Pitchford did not provide detailed reasons for this decision. I explained the situation to 2K Games and Sony.

Sony‘s games used to be weak. The company is known to have done crossword puzzles in games like the Rocket League and seems to reject such systems whenever possible. This issue was recently posted on Epic. When Apple, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney announced that his studio had paid Sony to enable cross-platform play in Fortnite. According to Sweeney, Sony is the only platform owner looking for cross-play awards. If Sony requested payment from 2K and Gearbox to add Borderlands 3 cross-play, 2K Games could have declined the payment and instead removed the PlayStation console from the new feature. This seems to be the most likely scenario for Pitchford’s mysterious tweet deletion.

The news comes two days after Bungie released the beta of Destiny 2, an outdoor shooter with a PlayStation console. Pitchford has not announced when the Borderlands 3 cross-play feature will be released or whether it will be in beta before launch.
