Facebook, is now Meta Platforms, Inc. In short, it is called Meta. On 28 October 2021 Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company is rebranding itself and building the metaverse. Metaverse is a simulation in which people interact as avatars in real-time. This new game signifies that the company doesn’t want to just build this metaverse but also wants to be the face of it, too.

Mark Zuckerberg said, “from now on, we’re going to be metaverse first, not Facebook first. As our new brands start showing up in our products, I hope that people come to know the Meta brand and the future that we stand for.” The full backstory behind Meta’s new branding is not known. The logo looks like a twisted infinity sign. While announcing the new name Mark said he liked Meta because it’s a Greek word that “symbolizes there’s always more to build.”

This year’s Connect Conference focused on explaining how the metaverse and the technology that powers it will actually work. The presentation focused on how people might go to work, exercise, study, play games and even study in a virtual, three-dimensional environment, whenever it goes live. It has a series of colorful and highly animated demonstrations.

Mark also said that his company is putting lot of effort to build new products for the metaverse. This includes new video game experiences, highly realistic digital avatars, new virtual and augmented reality hardware. Adopting the new name is to highlight the new metaverse business of the company and this operates separately from the social media apps.

Seven years after the company purchase Oculus the new focus on the metaverse came. This company builds virtual reality headsets that allow people to play 3D virtual games. The company’s vice president of augmented and virtual reality announced on Thursday that the Oculus name would not be there and that its hardware and apps will now operate under the Meta brand.

The company formerly known as Facebook is pivoting to the metaverse as it faces a deluge of challenges. The challenges include:

  • A potential probe from the Federal Trade Commission.
  • The ire of lawmakers concerned about the Facebook plans to build a kid’s version of Instagram.
  • A surge in critical media coverage
  • Thousands of internal documents were leaked by the company whistleblower.

The documents have given the public a new view of the company’s operations. The new approach shows that the company doesn’t think current challenges should hamper its ambitions. Facebook indicated that it had learned lessons from its experience running the world’s largest social media platform. While developing the metaverse over the past few years, the company leaders said that the company would be more cautious.

From the beginning, the researchers will be consulted and privacy, interoperability, and openness will be built into Facebook’s metaverse products from the outset. The companies new name suggests that the metaverse will primarily be made by the company. Much of the conference was focused on how the company is getting the technology needed for metaverse ready.
