Nowadays, one way to improve smartphones is to redraw the screen with a high refresh rate quickly. The typical frequency is 60 times per second (60 Hz), but the high refresh rate can reach 90 Hz or 120 Hz, and the fast refresh rate can achieve smooth scrolling and help the game look better. But a high refresh rate consumes a lot of power, which is why many phones that support it allow users to disable it to extend battery life. LTPO helps by elegantly adapting to the high and low frame rates of screen refreshes per second to achieve ultra-high efficiency. The display flickers absent-mindedly at low refresh rates using an old technology called LTPS (abbreviation for low-temperature polysilicon). “If you want a phone with a high refresh rate, this is the way you have to go,” said Ross Young of Display Supply Chain of LTPO. “Otherwise it will cost you in energy.”

LTPO is a new way to create one of the most important layers of a digital display: the background. The back contains thousands of transistors, tiny on/off switches that control how pixels in adjacent layers of the screen produce light. LTPO is the “best” backplane approach and is well suited for turning transistors on and off. Jeffrey Matthews, an analyst at Strategy Analytics, says it combines three benefits: high resolution, adjustable frame rates, and “very low power consumption.” However, there is a 5-10% mark-up.

It cannot replace a separate display system to generate light, such as backlit light-emitting diodes (LED) or active-matrix organic light-emitting diodes (AMOLED). Therefore, don’t be surprised to hear mobile phone manufacturers say they are using AMOLED and LTPO.

LTPO is a significant addition to Apple’s ProMotion display technology, which offers variable refresh rates up to 120Hz. While ProMotion is currently only available on iPad, some analysts, including Omdia’s David Hsi, say the iPhone 13 (or Apple calls it). At least the Pro model uses LTPO. Apple already has LTPO experience with the Apple Watch. The company was the first to use LTPO on the Apple Watch Series 4 2019. This became important with the Apple Watch Series 5. It made updates very slow for a watch that was always on and didn’t waste much battery life. Apple owns several LTPO patents.

Display Supply Chain’s Young said: “They installed it on the watch and used ProMotion on the iPad Pro.” When the iPhone 13 is released, Apple “may shine and advertise it.”
