Google Intends to Remove Apps From the Playstore that are made for “Sugar Dating”

Google LLC is an American multinational technology company that specializes in Internet-related products and services, including online advertising technology, search engines, cloud computing, software, and hardware. It is considered one of the four major technology companies along with Amazon, Facebook, and Apple. Google was founded in September 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin while they were still studying for a Ph.D. Student at Stanford University in California. Together, they own approximately 14% of publicly traded shares and control 56% of shareholders’ voting rights through super voting rights. The company went public in 2004 through an initial public offering (IPO). In 2015, Google was reorganized as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alphabet Inc. Google is Alphabet’s largest subsidiary and the holding company of Alphabet’s assets and interests on the Internet. Sundar Pichai was appointed as Google’s CEO on October 24, 2015, succeeding Larry Page, who became Alphabet’s CEO. On December 3, 2019, Pichai also became the CEO of Alphabet.

Google announced that from September 1st, the Android Play Store will not allow the use of the “Sugar Dating” application as part of a series of policy changes on the platform. This change was first reported by the Android police, specifically prohibiting “compensatory behavior” related applications. Google said that other changes to the platform include a new crackdown on dormant developer accounts. Traditionally, sweet dating relationships involve older and wealthy people dating and giving gifts to young couples. As Android Police pointed out, there is no shortage of apps on the Play Store designed to establish a “sweet dad” relationship. None of them made it clear that older men should compensate for the feelings of younger women, but many emphasized the wealth of men in their services. Inactive developer accounts will also be deleted from the Google Play store.

These applications have banned applications that promote “services that may like to provide sex in exchange for compensation.” But the updated wording expands this definition to explicitly include “paid dating or sexual arrangements in which one participant is expected or should provide money, gifts, or financial support to another participant (‘sugar dating’).” Google’s ads did not clearly state why these apps are now banned. However, after the FOSTA-SESTA legislation was introduced in the United States in 2018, the platform cracked down on work in the industry. The legislation removed the protection of “promotion or promotion of prostitution” in Article 230. A Google representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In addition to changing the rules of the dating app, the search giant has also introduced a new policy that if the developer account is inactive for a year, it will delete the developer account.

Google says it will set an exception for accounts behind apps that have been installed more than a thousand times or recently purchased in-app, but if the developer does not upload the app or log in to the Google Play Management Center within 12 months, your account will be Delete at risk. In the video describing the changes, Google stated that it will notify developers of the upcoming removal 60, 30, and 7 days before it occurs. The policy update also provides more information about Google’s previously announced changes regarding Play Store spam and opt-out of advertising IDs. On September 29, it will update its product details and promotion policies to prohibit “unwanted text and graphics in-app titles, icons, and developer names.” Its advertising policies will be updated on October 4 to reflect these changes.
