James Michael Tyler, the star who represented Gunther on Friends, announces that he has stage 4 prostate cancer.

The 59-year-old arrived on Monday’s Today show to chat about his cancer course. He was diagnosed in September 2018, he shared, but it was not detected at the beginning. It has since expanded to his bones, and he can no longer roam. He’s enduring chemotherapy.

“I was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer, which had spread to my bones,” Tyler told Craig Melvin. “I’ve been dealing with that diagnosis for almost the past three years.” However, “It’s stage 4 [now], late-stage cancer, so ultimately, it’s gonna probably get me.”

Tyler’s cancer was discovered throughout a regular prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test — his beginning at age 56. A typical PSA number is around 1; Tyler’s was 654. (Doctors suggest that Black men or men with an account of prostate cancer get their first at 40. All others, at age 45.)

At first, he was given hormone therapy, and he responded well. Nevertheless, everything took a change among the pandemic when he “needed going in for a test, which was not a good thing,” His cancer mutated, and he sustained cracks in his bones and tumefactions up and down his backbone. It led to paraplegia, or insensibility of the lower body. He’s currently experiencing chemo, which is “aggressively” battling the condition.

Tyler said he repents not hearing from his partner, who has been his “power in all of this. I would have gone in earlier. It would have been expectedly caught earlier. Next time you go for a just a necessary exam or your annually checkup, please ask your physician for a PSA test. Detected early, 99 percent treatable.”

Tyler remarked that David Schwimmer and producers were informed of his disease. On the mega-hit program, he played Central Perk fave Gunther, who brought a torch for Jennifer Aniston’s Rachel.

James performed on scenes of Scrubs and Sabrina, the Teenage Witch. He also Matt LeBlanc’s post-Friends series Episodes.
