It was written by Harry Styles, Jeff Bhasker, Mitch Rowland, Ryan Nascu, Alex Salibian and Tyler Johnson. As we all know, the song was a commercial and critical success throughout the world. Certainly, “Sign of the Times” established and kick-started Harry’s solo career. Moreover, the music video for the song was released in May 2017, which currently holds 718 million views on YouTube. Talking about the composition, Harry Styles composed the song while playing random chords on the piano. Moreover, the song was cut in three hours, and Bhasker called it “an instant classic-sounding record from the conception to completion”.
Above all, “Sign of the Times” won the 2018 Brit Awards for British Artist Video of the Year. It also went on to win the Best Music Video at the 2018 iHeartRadio Music Awards. Besides, the song received majorly positive reviews and was described as pop rock and soft rock ballad. Moreover, the song reached number one on the UK Singles Chart and was certified platinum in the country. Hence, it became the top certified rock songs of 2017 as per RIAA.

As soothing as the song was, but let’s face the truth, most of us weren’t able to crack what the song was about. Nonetheless, the theme of “Sign of the Times” sounded positive and inspiring.
After the song came out, people speculated that Harry tried to depict his personal life and issues, that he usually be mum about. But it came out as a surprise for everyone when people got to know that the song “Sign of the Times” was about childbirth. Certainly, people expected some personal inspiration behind the song. However, talking about the song, Styles explained, “Sign of the Times came from ‘This isn’t the first time we’ve been in a hard time, and it’s not going to be the last time. The song is written from the point of view as if a mother was giving birth to a child and there’s a complication. The mother is told, ‘The child is fine, but you’re not going to make it.’ The mother has five minutes to tell the child, ‘Go forth and conquer.’
Although it might be different from people’s translation, the real meaning behind Sign of the Times is equally beautiful.
